Disney Plus is set to enforce a crackdown on password sharing by prohibiting users from sharing their accounts with those outside their household. CEO Bob Iger announced during an earnings call that this enforcement will commence in earnest this September. The company has been considering this move since last September.
In February, Disney Plus revealed plans to introduce paid sharing and began notifying users. This feature was rolled out in select countries in June, and by September, password sharing restrictions will extend to other regions. Additionally, Disney will raise prices for Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus starting in October.
Disney plans to offer a paid option for account sharing outside the household, though pricing details have yet to be announced. It remains uncertain if this change will affect Disney’s Indian subsidiary, Disney Plus Hotstar. For context, Netflix implemented similar restrictions in India last year, limiting account access to a single household.
Iger expressed confidence about the upcoming price hikes, indicating he is “not concerned” about potential subscriber losses. He noted that the inclusion of ABC News Live and curated playlists enhances the service’s value, providing “pricing leverage” for the company.
