The Internet Governance and Policy Project (IGAP) has released a report titled “Social Media Transparency Reporting: A Performance Review,” analyzing how major social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, and others comply with India’s IT Rules, 2021. The report highlights gaps in transparency, including inconsistent data from platforms like Koo and LinkedIn, unclear automated content moderation by Snap and ShareChat, and complex grievance redressal mechanisms. It calls for more detailed, standardized reporting and better oversight of automated tools. The report offers recommendations to improve transparency and ensure accountability to Indian users.
