The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into the mobile browser market, focusing on concerns that Apple’s policies are hindering competition. The inquiry, part of a broader study on mobile ecosystems, found that Apple and Google dominate the market, limiting innovation by restricting features for other browsers and disadvantaging smaller developers. The CMA also found that a revenue-sharing agreement between Apple and Google discourages competition on iOS browsers.

The CMA is considering recommending further investigation under new digital market rules, which would allow them to designate companies as having “Strategic Market Status” and impose interventions to improve competition. The investigation also addressed mobile cloud gaming, where Apple has recently allowed cloud gaming apps on the App Store, resolving some concerns.

The CMA plans to finalize its findings by March 2025 after soliciting public comments.
