Disney+ is taking steps to combat password sharing by informing subscribers that only individuals within their households can use the service. Those outside the household must sign up for their own accounts or can be added as an extra member for a fee. The streaming platform now offers “gift” options to allow users to pay for friends or family outside their homes who previously accessed the account.
Subscribers away from home can still use the service via a one-time passcode sent to their registered email. These paid-sharing features, launched in select markets earlier this summer, are now available in the U.S., Canada, and other regions. In the U.S., adding an extra member costs $6.99 per month for basic subscriptions and $9.99 for premium ones, with only one extra member allowed per account. Disney+ plans to implement similar measures for Hulu and ESPN, which have already cautioned subscribers against sharing log-in details.
